Summary

This book started with a murder on a train and the victim could have been anyone, but ended up being narrowed down by Miss Marple and her friend。 Pretty decent quick read…3/5

A great who dunnit! Lots of suspects and a great twist。 I did suspect the murderer but the clever writing put me off the scent! I kept thinking how much easier to solve this it would be today with technology! A book of its time with language - some of which I had to look up and assumptions of a woman’s worth only being anything if they marry。 That being said the wisest person is of course the “old maid” herself, Miss Marple!

So many plot twists! So many awkward proposals of love! So many unnecessarily long last names (how many times did my eyes skim over McGillicudy and Crackenthorpe??)!Agatha Christie is truly the queen of mystery。 I think I’ve loved every book of hers I’ve read, and this one was no exception。 This was my first Miss Marple book, and I will say that I missed Hercule Poirot and his little gray cells。 But I did truly love all the characters, the plot, and the mystery。 All in all, I really enjoyed read So many plot twists!

My favorite of Christie's books。。。 I think。 It's getting harder and harder to say that, though。I'm always so impressed by Lucy Eylesbarrow as a character and the subplot of Martine in particular。 Christie also did such a GREAT job writing children。 I love the respect she gives them。Because I listened to Joan Hickson narrate it, the story brought up fond memories of the adaptations with her as Miss Marple, and I LOVED howhttps://www。goodreads。com/review/edit。。。# close they stuck to the book。 I'd My favorite of Christie's books。。。 I think。 It's getting harder and harder to say that, though。I'm always so impressed by Lucy Eylesbarrow as a character and the subplot of Martine in particular。 Christie also did such a GREAT job writing children。 I love the respect she gives them。Because I listened to Joan Hickson narrate it, the story brought up fond memories of the adaptations with her as Miss Marple, and I LOVED howhttps://www。goodreads。com/review/edit。。。# close they stuck to the book。 I'd missed that before。 。。。more

Oh dear

This has been my least favourite Agatha so far。Miss marple is not in it enough and it’s quite easy to work out who it is。

Carol Mcarthur

Gradually working my way through Agatha Christie。 Not my favourite Miss Marple。Didn’t guess the murderer, but then I rarely do。A friend witnesses a murder on a passing train but there is no body。Telling Miss Marple all about it, Miss Marple hatches a plan that discovers the body and eventually the murderer and background story。

Fran Scandolara

On the whole, a very gripping story, from the initial murder (even better when you actually read it while on a train ^^) throughout the investigation, everything is still possible until the last 3 pages。。。 But then the revelation of the culprit and motive felt out of left field, so that I'm rather disappointed by the climax, even though I enjoyed the ride。 On the whole, a very gripping story, from the initial murder (even better when you actually read it while on a train ^^) throughout the investigation, everything is still possible until the last 3 pages。。。 But then the revelation of the culprit and motive felt out of left field, so that I'm rather disappointed by the climax, even though I enjoyed the ride。 。。。more

She had me right up to the very end!Agatha Christie has a wonderful way of shaping her reader’s thoughts。 I always feel that I am one step ahead of our dear detectives but I am so rarely right。 But that is the joy of the mystery! Can’t wait for my next Christie!

Well that was unexpected

An old woman in a train happened to see a murder happening in another train from her window。 Or was she hallucinating。。。My first Agatha Christie classic and surely, made me a fan of Miss。 Marple and Lucy。 A gripping read which keeps you engaged。 Loved the way British writers write。 Overall, a decent read。

John RS

Classic Agatha Christie。 Sure the language is a bit dated, as are the roles expected of women, particularly in this case。 But the writing steams along, red herrings are plentiful, and the conclusion is satisfying。 Modern whodunnits get some part of this wrong, but this writing is so crisp and enjoyable。 Easy to see why people still read Marples and Poirots to this day。

Alcides Martinez

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I was shocked to find out the doctor was the killer。 The book was well written and had well executed female characters。

DNF at 67%Jesus Christ this was boring。 If you’re thinking of picking up this book just don’t, the writing, story and characters were all dull and dry and for a Marple book she was barely in it。Not worth your time or money。 AVOID!

Nate Goldstein

My favorite Miss Marple

Carla Louw

Once again completely unexpected and captivating。 I particularly enjoyed the sideline stories occurring, especially the slight romance between the young lady and a possible murderer。 Although entertaining, it was missing that “aha, everything makes sense now” moment that I so long for。

Judy Packard

I enjoy Agatha Christie。

You see, I expected complexity。 I expected intelligence。 I expected a puzzle, a game。 But that's not what any of this is。 It hides not behind complexity, but behind mind-numbing, obvious clarity。 Truth is, it doesn't hide at all。 I was staring right at it。- Benoit Blanc Every long-running crime series has a book where the detective is delegated to the side-lines。 A large part of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel The Valley of Fear is set in the US, for example。 '4:50 from Paddington' is a Miss You see, I expected complexity。 I expected intelligence。 I expected a puzzle, a game。 But that's not what any of this is。 It hides not behind complexity, but behind mind-numbing, obvious clarity。 Truth is, it doesn't hide at all。 I was staring right at it。- Benoit Blanc Every long-running crime series has a book where the detective is delegated to the side-lines。 A large part of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel The Valley of Fear is set in the US, for example。 '4:50 from Paddington' is a Miss Marple story with not much Miss Marple in it; one of Marple's friends observes a murder in a passing train, Miss Marple sneaks in a spy into a nearby property to find out more about the crime。 What her spy (the wonderful Lucy Eyelesbarrow) does in the estate and what the police sees, makes up much of the story。 Marple appears only from time to time。 What's most disappointing is the ending - (view spoiler)[Miss Marple just somehow knows the murderer, there's a large and hasty twist at the end which throws away most of what happened before。 Thus the quote above - you cannot really guess with Miss Marple because you're being kept in the dark。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
